The Problem:
Computer monitor interior wear: As text scrolls across
your computer monitor the sharp edges on some letters scrape
the inside of the screen. Over long periods of time this puts
scxratches on the inside of your computer monitor, and wears
off the inner phosphorous coating. Eventually the scratches
will become deeper and start to wear into the glass. Thinning
of the glass will occur resulting in the potential for screen
failure.
Notice the difference
between the font used for the above paragraph and the font
used for the rest of this page. The font used above is Times
Roman. You can see that it has small, sharp points that can
result in abrasion on the inside of your computer monitor.
Now look at the letters in this paragraph. The font used for
this paragraph is the Arial font. You can see that there are
no small, sharp points.
The size of the
font also impacts the amount of wear. The larger the font
size, the greater the wear on your monitor. Notice the letter
"t" in the following line. It has a sharp point
on top and at the bottom. Because it is diaplayed in a very
large font, the following will cause significant screen wear
if you scroll this page up or down.
The letter "t"
in this line will cause significant computer screen wear.
The Symptom:
How Can You Tell Whether You Are Getting Interior Computer
Monitor Wear?
If you
see dust of any sort under or around your monitor, this is
dust may be resulting from the scraping of the letters as
they move on the inside of your screen.
The Solution
to Computer Screen Wear:
First,
scroll text up and down on your computer monitor as little
as possible. The less movement of text on your screen, the
less wear there will be.
A temporary
fix is to use smaller size fonts and
fonts that are more
rounded. This will reduce the wear caused by the sharp edges
of some fonts.
The
problem is that you can not select the fonts used on a web
page. The web designer who created the web site selected the
fonts for you.
An alternative
solution is to make the text on the page very small. Your
browser has a setting that allows you to adjust the text size.
Setting the text size so small that it can not be read will
significantly reduce computer screen wear.
A long
term fix is under development. Please return to this web site

wear.
